The pretty, listed village of Poilhes is in the L’Herault department of the Languedoc region of the south of France. The Canal du Midi flows through the centre of the village, and the passing boats add colour to the local scene. Surrounded by vineyards, Poilhes makes a perfect place to spend a relaxing, away-from-it all holiday, or alternatively, if you wish to explore this extraordinary area, the village is just 20 minutes from the long, sandy beaches of the Mediterranean and 30 minutes from the mountainous Haut Languedoc national park. The village has a small shop and a restaurant. The historic village of Capestang is only 4 kms. away and has a supermarket, bank with cash machine, and petrol-station as well as markets every Wednesday and Saturday.

As Poilhes is situated in the ancient Cathar region of France , which abounds in history and romance, there are many places of interest to visit in the surrounding area, including the iron-age hill fort of the Oppidum d’Enserune, with its spectacular view of the Etang de Montady. The city of Béziers is just 10 minute away, and Narbonne, which, was the first roman city established outside Italy, is just 20 minutes. Carcassonne, with the largest intact medieval castle in Europe, is an hour away, as is the bustling city of Montpellier. Slightly further afield is the Catalan city of Perpignan, and Barcelona is just 2˝ hours by motorway.
